-------------------------------------------------------------------- We RAISE FINE NEZ PERCE APPALOOSA HORSES at "M-Y Sweetwater Appaloosa Ranch," Lapwai, Idaho, on the Nez Perce Reservation. We BREED, TRAIN, PASTURE, SELL & DELIVER the horses and do DAY RIDES.
We are members of: the APPALOOSA HORSE CLUB in Moscow, Idaho; the NEZ PERCE APPALOOSA HORSE CLUB and the NEZ PERCE HORSE REGISTRY, both with headquarters in Lapwai, Idaho.
Our Family & Horses are Rich in Tradition & History
Some of our horses are registered with the APPALOOSA HORSE CLUB (Foundation, i.e., Blue Bear/Toby lines and Zip's Cochise, John Wayne's horse); some are from the "OLD HERD" in Wallowa, Oregon (Chief Joseph's Band); and some are from the NEZ PERCE TRIBE'S HORSE REGISTRY (Akhal-Teke & Appaloosa Crosses). We have it all!
OUR MISSION: The Nez Perce people are historically known for their selective horse breeding practices, especially of the Appaloosa horse (“Maamin,” the Nez Perce word for Appaloosa). We strive to follow the lead of our ancestors and carry on their legacy and traditions by breeding, training, riding and trading (selling) Appaloosa stock --- for our own enjoyment and that of our family, our community and our friends (old and new).
When we started our breeding program, we had Appaloosas with STRONG Foundation lines. We strengthened our Appy bloodlines even more when we obtained some nice, "old herd" Appy mares from the Minam line in Wallowa, Oregon. (See our Breeding Section.)
In 1995, to support our Nez Perce Tribe’s new Nez Perce Horse Registry, we bred some of our Appy mares to the Tribe's Akhal-Teke stallions (see our Breeding Section). We now have Appaloosa/Akhal-Teke mares that we breed to our Appaloosa/Akhal-Teke stud, "Ciikowis Timina" (NPHR #002). We are very pleased with the Appearance, Temperament, Athleticism and Performance of this new cross!
However, the large herd of the M-Y Sweetwater Appaloosa Ranch is still predominantly Foundation Appaloosa, and we’ll continue our efforts to preserve the wonderful Appaloosa horse!
