NEZ PERCE APPALOOSA HORSE CLUB - BRIEF HISTORY

The Nez Perce Appaloosa Horse Club (NPApHC) was formed on the Nez Perce Reservation in 1991 as a direct result of a dream brought to fruition by Nez Perce tribal member Allen Pinkham and Bob Browning of Farmington, New Mexico. Mr. Browning donated 13+ Appaloosas from his herd to the Nez Perce people because of his desire to help reintroduce and promote the Appaloosa breed among the Nez Perce, who are historically credited with selectively breeding Appaloosa horses, and to help revive the horsemanship skills for which the Nez Perce were once renowned.

The first NPApHC President was Lisa Sonneck (1991-92), followed in succession by Carla HighEagle (1993), J. R. Spencer (1994), Bryce Carlin (1995-96), Leroy Williams (1997-98), and Rosa Yearout (1999-2001), Sylvia Jackson (2002), and Kay Kidder (2003-2005).

Besides starting the NPApHC, a condition of Mr. Browning’s donation of his horses, was the formation of the Chief Joseph Foundation (CJF) as a non-profit, charitable entity designated as the owner of the horses and to act as a channel for public donations, including grants, to be used for the benefit of the Nez Perce community. Allen Pinkham has served as Chairman of the CJF Board of Directors from its inception to-date.

In 1993 a Charter and By-Laws for the NPApHC was adopted by the membership; however, only a draft of the document has been found. Therefore, in order to conduct business and other activities in an orderly fashion, a proposed Constitution and By-Laws (with provisions to be designated as a non-profit organization) will be presented to the NPApHC membership for adoption. Once approved, it will supersede a signed copy of the 1993 document should it surface in the future, and we will be able to receive tax deductible donations to help with our goals for families.

In addition to Carla HighEagle (President), the other officers mentioned in the 1993 draft were Lisa Sonneck (Vice-President), J. R. Spencer (Secretary), Laura Lozon (Treasurer), Robert Samuels (Youth Advisor), Russ Spencer (Points keeper), Lilly Kauffman (Outlying Area Representative), Norm Wasson (Newsletter Editor), and Youth Representative (Vacant).

NEZ PERCE APPALOOSA HORSE CLUB - PURPOSE

The original purpose of the NPApHC was “to promote horsemanship and activities for tribal youth as a drug prevention strategy and building of self-esteem skills.”

In the beginning, there were no funds available for the care of the horses donated by Mr. Browning, so the NPApHC had fund-raising activities like baked food sales to buy hay and did the needed volunteer work, such as fencing, etc.

In 1991, NPApHC members included anyone in the Nez Perce community who wanted to help, i.e., horse owners and those who were interested in learning more about horses and concerned about youth. This still applies to NPApHC members today. Horse ownership is not a requirement. The NPApHC is open to all people and all horse breeds.

In addition to a focus on youth, NPApHC activities have been expanded to include the entire family in riding clinics, trail & endurance rides, camp-outs, horsemanship clinics, community service, parades and participation in tribal cultural events.
